Motto

The College motto is “Principles and Practice, Dedication to Humanity” which is derived from Zhouyi and Mencius, respectively.

The first part “Principles and Practice” comes from Zhouyi and highlights the importance of dual emphasis on both principles and practice. The second part “Dedication to Humanity” stems from a statement in Mencius — one should cultivate your own virtue in adversity and extend what you have to benefit the whole world in prosperity.

University is a place for knowledge creation and dissemination. Academic inquiry and promotion of scholarship can only be accomplished through learning of “principles” and taking actions to “practice”. Besides “Principles and Practice”, students are obligated to shoulder social responsibility as a tradition of Chinese culture and act for the benefit of society at large to make a better world.
